DUNAMARE ONDERWIJSGROEP
A new school
with a new name.
A decline in students in Haarlem led Dunamare Onderwijsgroep to merge three VMBO schools — Paulus Mavo, Sterren College, and part of Daaf Gelukschool — into one. Youngworks, a creative agency specializing in young adults marketing, was tasked with naming it, and I was asked to take the lead. I explored four approaches: (1) blending parts of the original name; (2) a fantasy name (3) a descriptive name (4) a name based on the location. After many proposals, Spaarne College was chosen, inspired by the eponymous river that runs through Haarlem. In August 2020, the new school opened in the former Sterren College building on Badmintonweg, welcoming over 900 students.
